Located south of Mexico City in the state of Morelos, Tepoztlán is the perfect combination of tropics, mountains, and Mexican charm. While the journey to Tepoztlán might be a little daunting for anyone who doesn’t have the desire to go off the beaten path, I really enjoyed this little town and would gladly choose to go back a second time. The most popular thing to do is to hike to the Aztec temple El Tepozteco. Yet thanks to a late arrival in town and the need to reach the top before it closed, I pushed the climb a little too hard and fast and ended up getting an extreme case of altitude sickness. I was unfortunately the reason our group only made it about halfway, but it was still a fun adventure nonetheless. So, if you plan on hiking up to this temple, be prepared for a steep climb that is not meant for the faint of heart. Or, at least give yourself more than an hour to reach the top. On the way down, we ended up getting led off the main trail by a friendly local who took us to a beautiful view point, unknown to most tourists. The views were definitely stunning and made me feel less guilty about costing our group the views from El Tepozteco. From here you could see the quaint town of Tepoztlán and really take in the scenery. I was in awe of the unique landscape that made me feel like I was in some alternate version of a tropical mountainous Narnia. As we wandered through town just before sunset, the cobblestone streets were quiet and peaceful. I loved all the colorful murals that were painted on the walls. The main street was more lively and we enjoyed an authentic meal in the main covered market. Our dinner consisted of tacos with nopales, bananas, and cheese. The banana cheese combo was my favorite! Who would have thought that essentially a banana quesadilla would have been so delicious. Tepoztlán is a popular spot for backpackers, with many affordable accommodations and hostels to choose from and a nightlife with good vibes. I would certainly recommend visiting Tepotzlán to anyone wanting a little escape from Mexico City full of natural and cultural beauty.
